Spooky Story by Dimitra Roussea, Proficiency, NEON Aegina

Where our demons hide.
The young woman walked, almost slipping in the blood that fell from her arm. Her injured hand was about to fall, whereas the other pressed the wound, trying desperately to stop the bleeding. But unfortunately it was too late…
Amanda Willows got out of her car and paced towards the mental hospital where she worked. She was a psychiatrist, one of the most successful in New York City, something that brought her many difficult patients to deal with but a great salary. Today, she had to speak with an old man who had killed his wife and aftewards attempted to commit suicide. The police eventually arrested him before he could harm himself and had brought him to the asylum some days earlier. He had spoken with several psychologists. However none of them seemed  mentally ready to take his case. Amanda did not remember  his name, but she had read his file. A fairly normal life he had led, until, for unknown reasons, he murdered his beloved wife in her sleep. This could be a sign of depression, schizophrenia or many other mental illnesses but, the only question that was travelling around Dr. Willows mind was, why would he do such a terrible thing?
She made it towards the room where the oldman was. Outside stood George, a policeman that kept an eye on him in case he tried anything.
‘Good morning, Miss Willows’ greeted the policeman, with a smile spreading over his face.
‘Good morning to you as well, George. Is he in there?’ inquired Amanda.
‘Aye. We have him locked up. Poor man. He must have been truly desperate’ responded George.
‘I see. I’ll examine his situation then’ she sighed.
Before she could open the door, George caught her shoulder.
‘Be careful with him Miss Willows. Many psychologists have been through this door and have come out needing mental help themselves’ warned the policeman.
‘I am not a psychologist George, but thanks. I will take precautions’ smilled the doctor and opened the door.
Her smile faded as soon as she faced the man in the straightjacket. His piercing black eyes observed her as she went and sat in front of him. His appearance was hideous and  his eyes were red.
Amanda put her file on the table in front of her and opened it.
‘Shall we start? Can you tell me your name?’ she asked the patient.
He looked at her, as if he was trying to stab her in the heart multiple times.
‘It would certainly be something of no use, as you have already read my file, Doctor’ he used her title mockingly.
‘Then let’s get to the point. Why would someone commit homicide? Weren’t you happy with your life?’ she inquired.
‘It is not about whether you are happy or not. It is about when your demons are about to get out. You cannot control them. None of us can’ responded the man, remorslessly.
‘Oh, so we are talking about something supernatural here. Unfortunately I do not view any signs of demonic posesion here, otherwise they would have called a priest, not a psychiatrist’ noted Amanda.
‘Do not mock me, little girl. Maybe you will not be that confident when your demons come out’ hissed  the man menacingly.
‘I do not mock you. I am trying to help you. And trust me, your threats are of no use’ she replied calmly.
‘You cannot. Try and help yourself before he finds you’ he said.
‘And may I ask who he is?’ she said.
Before she could finish her question, the man’s eyes turned up. He started trembling violently and foam came out of his mouth.
Amanda instantly got up.
‘George!’ she shouted to the policeman putside, who once he heard her cry burst in the room taking Amanda away from the man, as multiple nurses came in to help.
Amanda was safely taken back home, and the man died that night.
Who was he? What had the man been talking about?
Amanda was trying to sleep throughout the night, but she was not that lucky. Questions were buzzing in her mind, so she decided to stroll in the park nearby.
She put on her coat and went out in the cold winter night. She walked for a while, before she reached a place where there were no trees. Oddly enough, no sound could be heard. She looked around trying to figoure out the way home.
‘Where on earth am I?’ she mumbled to herself.
Before she could understand what was happening, her shadow towered her. It seemed like a natural sized person. The only difference? It was completely black and translucent at the same time.
Her legs started running away, before her mind told them to do so. Desperately, Amanda was trying to get away from this dark creature when she remembered the words of the old man.
‘Damn’ she though as she ran faster and faster.
Finally, she reached her home, got in and locked the door. The place was terribly dark, and the light seemed as it had gone out. The woman stayed silent for a few moments, bofere someone caught her neck from behind, trying to strangle her. She could not see the man that was doing this to her. Unofortunately this was no man. The thing threw her out of the window of her house and as a result, the glass cut her arm off. She cried out in pain, and tried to get onto her feets. Her breath came out heavily and her lungs were desperately asking for oxygen. She was trying to get away, to escape this madness. But her demon had got her….
